Photography is Art, Art comes from the Heart! Part 1

Hope you enjoy my “ramblings” and the slide show I put together at the end.  Leave a comment and tell me what you think!  I always value your feedback and thoughts!

Art comes from the Heart!  I first heard this from a great friend of mine.  Her name is Stephanie or “Stubby” as those of us that have the privledge of knowing her call her.  All things happen for a reason and I met Stubby through a mutual friend and have been inspired by her ever since.  She says I inspire her also, I hope I do so as to pay back the inspiration she gives me.  More on Subby in a coming post!  🙂  Subscribe to our Blog and you won’t miss it or part 2 of this series!

Photography, what do you think of when you hear the word?  Getting a portrait made is so much more then taking a snap shot, or going to a chain studio and being rushed through.  Photography is Art or it should be anyway.  A craft studied and perfected over years of dedication, passion and practice.  It’s understanding light and how to record the light, how to manipulate it.  More important, a great photograph should move you, it should speak to you, … composition,  light, subject all come together for that one special moment.

Not the moment before, not the moment after, but that one special moment, that defining moment, an heirloom caught in time to be cherished for generations to come.  And like any art, that Art should come from the heart!  All great art originated from the artists heart, All great art touches the heart of the viewer!

A great fine art photographer, friend, and mentor,  Judith Farber once said…”A great photograph should keep your attention for at least 5 seconds.  Judith once studied under Ansel Adams and Yousuf Kirsch at the same time!   http://interviewwithanartist.com/?p=166

Think about this for a moment, think about some of the great photographs of history that you will always see in your minds eye.  The image of that little girl in Vietnam fleeing her village after a Napalm bombing.  The image of the fireman holding that still baby at Oklahoma City.  How about that famous image from WWII the taking of Iwa Jima, the soldiers planting the flag.  Or the one of the sailor kissing that girl in the street on D day.  How about the image of Winston Churchill when the photographer, Yousuf Karsh took his cigar away, a classic image.  http://www.flickr.com/photos/monkeyc/95191971/    How about the candid images produced by Henry Cartier Bresson all of which are defining moments in time.

The technical perfection in the work of Ansel Adam’s, his knowledge of light and composition, the many many images of his that are all masterpieces, he spent many hours in a darkroom perfecting them not to mention his patience in studying the scene at hand to capture the image the best he could IN the camera, watching how the light would unfold over the scene, and capturing that scene at the perfect moment. Dedication and passion produced so many fine images, capturing those moments forever!

Yes there are thousands of images out there that strike an emotion and speak to us, but the one thing in common, other then being in the right place at the right time, the image, the art, came from their heart!   All these images capture our hearts and imagination as viewers for at least 5 seconds, we find we can’t take our eyes off them, something about them keeps our atttention.  That emotion, that “heart” that was put into them by the artist.

You won’t get these types of images by just going out and buying a DSLR, and calling yourself a photographer.  It takes years of experience to anticipate the moment, to capture it the way it unfolds.  It takes knowledge of light and how to manipulate it for the best possible results.  You have to be able to anticipate that moment, know when to snap the shutter….then you must be able to “see” the entire scene for the best possible composition of that moment.   And it all happens in a fraction of a second!

More abour “Art comes from the Heart” to come soon!  Subscribe to our blog and you won’t miss a post!

Enjoy the slide show, it’s about 4 min in length.

As always, hope you are having a great day!

A whole lot of fun!

Meet Chris, Kelsi, Holli, Abbi, and Dani!  Mom told me to make sure and catch them as they are and not a bunch of posed shots.  I don’t think that is quite what they expected  when they came in, but they got used to the idea real quick!  LoL  What a fun time!

As always, hope you are having a great day!

UI Dance Marathon

Last Friday, Feb 5, 2010 I had the privilege of photographing some of the children and their families that were participating in the University of Iowa Dance Marathon.  http://www.uiowa.edu/~dancemar/  I was so inspired by these children and their strength in fighting this terrible disease!  The thing that impressed me most was how special the shoot was for the kids and their families.  The fact that in the midst of dealing with such a disease, the willingness to open themselves up to being photographed is a testament to their resilience and the importance of these pictures in documenting their “spirit and strength” which was just incredible to witness!

Dance Marathon is a student run philanthropy dedicated to supporting oncology patients being treated at University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. It is a year-round organization that culminates with a 24 hour-long BIG Event in February. To date, Dance Marathon has raised over $8.6 million dollars for children being treated in Iowa City, 1,058,568.16 was raised for the children this year alone!

The photography for the children and families is coordinated by another great organization called “Flashes of Hope”.  http://www.flashesofhope.org/  They coordinate between the events, photographers, and all involved and provide these images to the families, all free of charge.

I hope you enjoy the pictures and get a little inspired yourself from the smiles on the faces and their strength and spirit!  I’m honored to have been a part of it!  A special thanks to Jaime Moquin and Stubby Webb for helping out, you definately made my job much easier, and more importantly helped create some memories for both the children and the families!  THANK YOU Jaime and Stubby!!!
