Wild Things!

I’ve never seen a wild thing feel sorry for itself…DH Lawrence

I LOVE this quote and it is SO true!

In the last 90 days I lost two beloved furry family members, Smokey and Chief.  In both cases, even toward the end, I never once saw them feel sorry for themselves.  They both let me know in their own way it was time for them to embark on a new journey!  And they let me know they were ok in very different ways after they had left this life and embarked on that new journey!

It was a lifechanging experience for me, not in a bad way, but they showed me how to communicate with energy, with positve thoughts, they showed me how important it is to take a moment everyday and just enjoy and be thankful for the little things that life can offer us if we are open to it.  They opened my eyes, my mind, my heart to my surroundings and what Mother Nature tries to tell us everyday!   Enjoy life, be happy!   Being happy is after all up to us as individuals through the choices we make on what we focus our energy on.

We can learn a lot about life from studying animals, pets and wildlife!  They live in the moment, they don’t care what happened 5 min ago and don’t worry about what will happen 10 min from now. Only this moment is what counts.

Yup I can now here some saying, “but they have no responsibilities”. I disagree, they still have to find food, they still have to care for their young and provide those young with food. They still have to teach and nurture the young. They also need homes and have to build their own homes.

They can help us on our own paths through life, they will communicate with us if we are open to that communication, they don’t speak in words, but they speak with energy!

There is a wonderful book called “Animal Speak” by Ted Andrews that is an awesome guide to learning what Mother Nature is trying to tell us, but we have to be “open” to that communication!

An excerpt from the beginning of the book:  ”  Many ancient myths and stories speak of a magical time and place in which there were no boundaries between humans and animals.  Animals and humans spoke.  Wild and tame had no meaning.  And always the divine revealed itself in nature.

The natural world and the animals within it speak to us everyday:  by their appearances, behaviours, movements, and characteristic patterns.  When we know what to look for, we can use them as omens—not in a superstitious sense, but in the development of true prophecy and higher perception.

Through this book you will realize how intricately every aspect of nature is woven into your life.  You will awaken to the ancient knowledge of spirit animals and how to determine their roles within your life.  They will touch a primal part of your heart and soul—and stir long dormant embers.  They will become your friends, your teachers and your companions.”

As always, hope you are having a great day!  And stay positive!

Orchestra Iowa, Jeans ‘n Classics, Music of Queen

Last Saturday, April 10th I once again had the honor of photographing one of Orchestra Iowa’s events!  This time they joined with the band Jeans ‘n Classics, the show choirs from Kennedy, Prairie, and City High to perform the music of Queen!

Oh what a night it was!  You knew as soon as you entered the US Cellular center that you were in for a special evening, there was a special energy in the air!  What a great performance by all!  One of the chorus members even asked a girl to the prom from the stage and she said yes.  🙂   My personal favorites were “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “We Are the Champions”, “Somebody to Love” and “Fat Bottom Girls.”

A special thanks to Jaimie Moquin for helping out, always great to work with you!  Also special thanks to Christy, Ed, Robert, and everyone at Orchestra Iowa for allowing us to participate in this event!  🙂

If you haven’t had the chance to see Orchestra Iowa perform, you owe it to yourself to go to one of their concerts.  I promise you will have a great time and enjoy some great music.  I’ve said it before and will keep saying it,  Eastern Iowa is extremely lucky to have an orchestra of the caliber that is Orchestra Iowa!   Please support them with a donation or purchase tickets to one, or better yet, get tickets to all their concerts with a season pass!  You can get all the details here:  http://www.orchestraiowa.org  Help support the arts in Eastern Iowa!

Artistic Adventures – Photography Workshops

A while back on Facebook, I mentioned I was going to start giving photography workshops to new and upcoming photographers.

They are going to be called Artistic Adventures and the first one is getting much closer!

The first one will be Sunday, May 23rd from 1 to 4pm.  Yes this is not the optimal time of day to shoot, but if you can get a great shot in midday light, think what you can do during golden hours around sunrise and sunset.  🙂

Also if you like to shoot portraits the street is a great place to start to improve!   Once again if you can get a great street portrait under harsh lighting conditions, think what you can do when you have control in a studio or when you shoot during “golden hour.”  There is a purpose for everything!  🙂

Cost will be $40 per person or two for $70 if you sign up together.  Class size will be limited to 10.   We will meet by Theater Cedar Rapids on 3rd st and 1st Ave in Cedar Rapids at 1pm.  I will be available to offer feedback the entire time.

You can reserve your spot by emailing me at:  carl@visionsphotography.net or calling 319-286-8483!

Participating in this workshop is geared to those who want to improve “how to see” photographically, going from snap shots to fine art.

All cameras from cells to point and shoot to professional SLR’s are welcome, including all photo levels, beginners to professionals.  It’s not about the equipment, but more about learning “how to see.”

The session will last 3 hrs. The more you show me your images as you shoot, the more feedback you will receive and the more you will improve your compositional skills. There is not another photo workshop like this in the area that offers this kind of personalized individualized attention after clicking the shutter.

At the end of our session, we also go over your images while reconfirming suggestions, and you begin to “get it,” understanding what to be aware of the next time you pick up your camera. Participants will come away with a better perspective and understanding in how to get more fine art images.

The streets are pure theater without the obtrusive fixture of a stage. View business people, mothers, fathers, children, students, all living moments without a script. It’s a photographer’s paradise.

Future workshops are planned and will be held in Iowa City, State Parks, and Local Parks.  Subject matter will include landscapes, use of models, lighting models with natural light as well as the use of fill flash both on and off camera and much more!

Once again, you can reserve your spot by emailing me at:  carl@visionsphotography.net or calling 319-286-8483!

As always, hope you are having a great day!  And stay positive!

Wow Wow and Wow! Positive Energy!

The power of positive energy! The final gift Chief, my beloved Siberian Husky, recently gave me before going to a better place.

Everyday the universe puts something good in front of us. Enjoy it, Embrace it, Let the other things slide off your shoulders!

It might be something as little as a cardinal’s song, or enjoying the warmth of the sun, or the magical colors during a sunrise or sunset, or maybe just a smile from your child from a special moment shared. It’s those little things in life that all add up. Take a moment out of your day to enjoy those little things!

Just taking a few moments from your busy lives to enjoy these things can start you on the journey toward positive energy. It can take your life and reverse its direction 180 degrees. Embrace these little moments, give thanks to them, smile about them, keep them in your heart throughout the day, if stress comes up, take a break to remember them. The stress of that moment will soon pass and a new moment will begin, a better moment. A more positive moment! 🙂

Believe me it can be life changing if you keep it up!  It takes a little practice, but if you force yourself to stay positive, that energy will come back to you many fold!   Positive brings positive, negative brings more negative!

Since Chief taught me this, I can’t begin to tell you how many positive things have come my way.  You can find allies in the most unusual places, all you have to do is “SEE” them, let your mind be open to them!  And thank the universe for bringing them to you!

Thank that cardinal for that special song, thank your child for that special moment, thank a friend for just being there….Thank you Miriam and Stubby and my son Joe and his wife Jenny, and my granddaughters Raven and Raquel, and thank you Greg!  Thank you Rick and Pat, Thanks also to Ed and Stephanie!  Thank you Mia!  Thank you Smokey!  And thank you Chief, I’d be lost without the gifts you gave to me!  🙂

Remember it is impossible to frown if you are smiling!  🙂

Stubby in the moment!
